What is an Allergic Reaction?
An allergic reaction is your immune system’s overreaction to a harmless substance (like dust, pet dander, or pollen). The unbearable sneezing and itching you may experience after an allergen exposure is your body’s protective response. What if you could reduce or even eliminate these reactions? Would you?
Common Allergy Triggers
- Food – Allergic reactions from food can range from mild intestinal discomfort to a dangerous immune system reaction. The top eight food allergens are milk, eggs, peanuts, treat nuts, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish.
- Medications – A reaction due to an immune system response is rare but possible. Most medication-related issues are called “non-allergic” or “adverse reactions” but can still have serious consequences, including anaphylaxis.
- Contact – Skin rashes can occur when your skin touches certain substances. Common contact allergens include latex, plants, soap, cosmetics, and jewelry.
- Insects – This includes biting, stinging, and even non-biting insects like cockroaches and dust mites.
Allergy Testing and Treatment Options
Allergy testing is performed to determine what allergens you are reacting to and how severe the reaction is. Allergy tests are commonly done by pricking the skin and introducing a small amount of the allergen. Based on the allergy test results, Ascentist Healthcare can create a treatment plan that is unique to your allergy profile.
